Beechwold Veterinary Hospital is dedicated to providing your pet with complete care – including modern dental care for your dog or cat. Dental technicians clean teeth with a safe ultrasonic scaler and polish teeth thoroughly as well as offering more advanced radiographs and extractions if necessary.

Plaque and Tartar Control

Just like human teeth, pet teeth can form plaque. This sticky substance then forms tartar, which is more difficult to remove. Our vets use an ultrasonic scaler to safely and gently remove plaque for your pet’s teeth and it offers superior plaque and tartar control. Our routine dental exam and cleanings help prevent gum disease in your pet by:

  • Allowing us to clean under the gum line
  • Allowing us to remove both plaque and tartar
  • Catch pet oral health issues early
  • Polish surface of tooth to discourage future plaque buildup
  • Do a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel

Gum Disease in Pets

Just like humans, both cats and dogs can develop gum disease. Gum disease most often manifests in bad breath and red inflamed gums. But there are other serious concerns with gum disease in pets, such as tooth loss. Pets might lose their appetite, drop food from their mouth while eating or lose weight although due to the pain caused by gum disease.

Pet Oral Health at Home

There are some easy steps you can take at home to help keep up a healthy pet oral health routine for your cat or dog:

  • Provide your pet with the right size dental snacks based on manufacturer recommendations– they need a few good chomps to fight plaque
  • Brush your pet’s teeth on a daily or weekly schedule with a pet toothbrush and dog or cat toothpaste
  • Do NOT use human toothpaste as it can be toxic to pets
  • Feed your pet dry food, which helps to fight plaque buildup
  • Buy your furry friend toxin-free rawhides or nylon/rubber chew toys that scrape away soft tartar
